Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I get started?

A. The first rule of thumb in family history research is to go from the known to the unknown. Give me the names, dates and places you already have from original records for the Ancestor in question--I can take it from there!

Q. What areas of research are your specialty?

A. Because I spent 20 years in the Sacramento Family History Center I have worked with clients who needed research from all over the world. I have become versatile in most areas of research--but am most comfortable with United States & Canada. I have lived in England and have experience in the records there.  My specialty is problem-solving using online records. I can access land, tax, naturalization, church, probate, military, and other records online as well as in Family History Library in Salt Lake City, the largest genealogical library in the world. I can usually find any missing ancestor in census and other online records.

Q. How do we keep in touch, exchange files and communicate?

A. I prefer email to voicemail so I can keep a written record of any information coming from my clients. That way all my data is in one place. Keep it simple! You can contact me at genealogy@susanjackman.com. Please feel free to ask me as many questions as you like! I will attach via email original documents, my research log and a written report with each project. If you prefer these items via U.S. Mail just let me know.

Q. How do you prefer to be paid?

A. I prefer you use either PayPal or a Major Credit Card for payment. You can pay as you go which makes it very easy for any size project. My fee is $40 per hour. If you wish to begin with 2 or 3 hours or more, simply change the quantity and click the update button before you finalize your payment.

Q. How do I use a major credit card on your site?

A. There are two ways to pay by major credit card:

1. You can call me @ 916-207-2004 with your credit card information. I use Square, Inc. Card-processing applications adhere to the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS), Level 1. You will receive a receipt for payment via email.

2. Simply bi-pass the Pay Pal option and click on the link below that reads Don't have a Pay Pal account?

Q. What are my options for a project size?

A. Choose from the following project sizes:

  • Certificates and Look Ups. Depending upon the project, 1 to 2 hours.
  • Getting Started. Three hour search. You can repeat this project as many times as you like! Pay up front. This is my most popular project size.
  • Six Hour Project. 50% deposit due at the beginning of the project with the balance due after I deliver the research. If you are digging deep or working in records before 1850, this is a good project size.
  • Custom Project. You choose!  Any project 4 hours or more pay a 50% deposit with balance due upon completion.

Q. What kind of report can I expect at the end of the research project?

A. With a 3 hour project expect a simple proof summary in document or PDF format. If you have a larger project and would like a book for your family members I will organize our findings in a computer generated narrative with family photos and full page copies of original records. It can take me more than an hour to organize my findings so keep this in mind when choosing a project size.

Q. Are you a member of any associations?

A. I am a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and have agreed to their published code of ethics. Clients who believe a member has not performed as expected or has failed to complete a genealogical service can file a complaint with the association. You can view my profile! Click here.
